Acupuncture

Dorene Bowe-Shulman, Lic.Ac., M.Ac.

Dorene has been in practice since 2006 at Be Well and Beyond, an integrative wellness center in Acton. She uses a gentle, effective acupuncture technique to help prevent or mitigate cancer treatment sideaffects. She is a graduate of Cornell University, Heller Graduate School of Brandeis University, and the New England School of Acupuncture.

JoAnn Simon, RD, Lic.Ac., MS

Candace Anderson

Candace is an award-winning artist and teacher who has exhibited her watercolor paintings at national and international exhibitions. She has earned Signature Membership with the New England Watercolor Society. Anderson worked for a decade as director of a grant-funded program using art and education in support of cancer care at hospitals in New England were many of her watercolors are permanently installed. Her paintings reflect her philosophy that being attentive to the design elements in nature, deepens one’s understanding of the intricate interconnectedness of existence. Anderson values the process of painting directly from nature.

Karen Farr Arsenault

Karen Farr Arsenault is an artist with a keen interest in self-expression through watercolor painting. As a cancer survivor and long-time Healing Garden client, she has used artistic expression to find new meaning in a life forever changed by cancer. Coming full circle, Karen now shares her artistic interests and passion with others, conducting mandala workshops and painting with those who seek to connect with their own creative spirit.

Bernadette Yao

Bernadette Yao is a Mind-Body Music & Reiki Therapist, who trained for four years at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. As a musician for over 30 years, Bernadette combines her unique blend of energy healing through music (vocals, crystal singing bowls, guitar, harmonium, keyboards, percussion) to create a soothing sound healing experience.www.bernadetteyao.com

Susie Allen, MDiv

Rev. Susie Allen is a spiritual director, organizational and leadership consultant, and founding member of the Kairos Spiritual Life Center in Worcester, MA. She received her Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School, and focused her studies in the areas of Faith, Health and Spirituality. Helene Gagliano, LICSW

Helene Gagliano is a seasoned Psychotherapist and Medical Counselor with a NASW Special Certification in Health Care, who offers her patients hope and compassion during their cancer journey. She offers encouragement and empowerment as you navigate treatment choices. She has a special interest in supporting the emotional healing needed for those with metastatic cancers or those who are post treatment. After serving for years on an Interdisciplinary Medical Team at Emerson Hospital, Helene has a breadth of knowledge related to the course of cancer treatment and how the medical system operates. Helene believes in a holistic and palliative care approach to medical treatment and has presented her therapeutic knowledge on a local and national level.

Marilyn Brine Gilmour, MSW, LICSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 40 years of experience in the field. In addition to her work as a psychotherapist, Marilyn has practiced Reiki since 1998. She has trained in EMDR, hypnotherapy, and several mind/body modalities. Marilyn has a special interest in the area of psychological trauma and experience in hospice as well as crisis intervention. Eleanor is a licensed clinical social worker with 25 years’ experience working with seriously ill patients and their families in the hospice setting and in private practice, as well as in facilitating bereavement support groups. Her expertise is in the area of major loss (illness, aging, dying, significant life change, bereavement) also caregiving and end-of-life planning.

Jane Shustin, LICSW, MSW

Jane embraces an alternative, progressive approach integrating psychotherapy with clinical hypnosis, biofeedback, stress management, and relaxation training. Practicing privately at a holistic health center in Groton, she has been helping people make wanted changes in their lives for more than 25 years. In individual and group contexts, her methods help calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety and worry, and restore balance to the mind and body. Dana Snyder-Grant, LICSW

Dana is a freelance writer and clinical social worker, specializing in chronic illness and disability. She worked for many years as a psychotherapist at The Eliot Center in Concord, Massachusetts, helping individuals and groups cope with medical illness and its challenges. Dana has brought her skills to The Garden where she runs our Journaling Support Group and counsels individuals facing a diagnosis of cancer or other serious illness. Dana uses writing, relaxation and meditation for healing in her work. She has also facilitated groups and workshops for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. John Barrett, CPT

John is a certified personal trainer who creates a unique fitness plan that integrates your personal goals and assessment results. John is a lifelong exercise enthusiast who set out to help cancer patients with their own fitness goals following his recovery from pancreatic cancer. He is supervised by Nancy Campbell, MS, an exercise physiologist in Dana-Farber’s Adult Survivorship Program. He has completed the Boston Marathon four times, and trekked his way up to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

Katherine W. Lee, LMT, RPP

Kathie is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Polarity Practitioner, and certified yoga instructor. She offers healing bodywork sessions using polarity energy balancing and therapeutic massage to deepen relaxation and expand inner awareness and harmony. Her weekly yoga classes recognize the need for individualized attention, and provide space for each student to open up her body and breath in a loving, safe, and mindful way.

Pam Turci, CMT, CLM

Pam is a certified Muscular Therapist, in practice since 2005, who practices Swedish relaxation massage, as well as Core Integration Movement Massage (CIMM) and Positional Release Therapy (PRT). The latter two are very gentle techniques for relaxing tight, contracted tissues in the body. CIMM has been developed from the work of Moshe Feldenkrais; it enables clients to learn new movement patterns that will alleviate habitual contraction of muscles that are currently being strained in daily activities; it can also improve posture and flexibility. Pam, who lives in Harvard, has also been trained in Tracy Walton’s method of Caring for Clients with Cancer.

Horticultural therapy

Penny Dickson, Women's Wilderness Retreat Leader

Penny runs nature walks in the Healing Gardens. Her walks integrate mindfulness with a nature immersion.

Nadine Mazzola, Certified Forest Therapy Guide

Nadine is a Certified Forest Guide trained to guide gentle walks in nature that support well being through sensory immersion. She is an artist and weaver and uses natural objects in her creations.

Integrative bodywork

Julie Fowler, EEM-CP, Reiki Jin Kei Do

Julie is a Certified Practitioner of Eden Energy Medicine as well as an Authorized Eden Energy Medicine 101/102 Class Instructor. She also has Advanced Energy Medicine training in working with cancer and other immune system issues. Julie has completed course work through the National Institute of Whole Health. There she had the opportunity to learn about looking at health and wellness from a physical, nutritional, emotional, spiritual and environmental perspective. Maria is a member of the Society for Oncology Massage, and is dedicated to serving people with cancer. Her wide range of personal experiences informs her massage practice; she has cared for a daughter with cancer, and has pursued a rich path of self-discovery and wellness that includes psychotherapy, macrobiotics, yoga, Pilates, homeopathic medicine, acupuncture, and co-counseling. She has enjoyed being an avid and active athlete, engaging in tennis, cross-country cycling, and figure skating.

Lisa W. MacDonnell, MT, Reiki Master, Neurofeedback Practitioner

Lisa is a licensed body and energy worker who has had a private practice in Concord since 1990. She currently brings together her years of study and experience under one body-centered therapy called, Guided Self Healing (GSH). Kate Smyers is a certified Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing with over thirty years of experience in health care. She has seen the power of combining Eastern and Western medicine to treat the whole person, particularly through the ancient Japanese healing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, sometimes called acupuncture without needles. Robyn is a Nurse Practitioner and Dietitian with over 20 years of experience who provides counseling and mentoring with a focus on weight loss or gain & maintenance, wellness consulting, and disease management. She does goal setting, nutrient analysis and menu planning for individuals with weight concerns and related medical nutrition therapy needs.
